Our Postgraduate Community

We have a vibrant community of postgraduate students here at the University of Northampton and in the Centre for Historical Studies, made up of both Masters and doctoral students.

We have regular research seminars and events.

In 2022-4, we will also be helping to administer the East Midlands Centre for History Teaching and Learning’s Postgraduate Researcher mentoring and training scheme. More information on this scheme will be available in late 2022.

These profiles show what a diverse range of work is being undertaken by our excellent PhD students.

Siobhan Hyland‘s research is on Searchlight’s anti-fascist magazine and the investigation of Nazi war crimes in 1980s-1990s.

“The opportunities I have had outside of my PhD study have been excellent!”

Daniel Jones‘s research looks at the creation and use of identity within far right and anti-fascist print cultures of post-war Britain, specifically looking at the magazines Spearhead and Searchlight.

“My research is based around our on campus Searchlight Archive, and has given me the opportunity to co-publish with my supervisor, and provide press interviews to try and contextualise and explain the contemporary far right as well.”

kerry1

Kerry Love‘s research interests focus on gender and political discourse from the late 18th to early 19th century, with an interest in how material culture can be used as source material.

“I chose to study at Northampton because the department has a wide range of research interests that help me explore interdisciplinary practices in a friendly, relaxed environment where I am comfortable exploring new ideas.”

kathrina1

Kathrina Perry‘s research looks at nineteenth-century philanthropy in the Northampton Boot and Shoe industry.

“As my specialism is Local History, it was only natural that I chose Northampton.  The support I have had so far from my supervisor and from the History department has been fantastic.”
